What does denier mean in tights?
The US National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, defines denier as the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of yarn in Miscellaneous Publication 199, printed p. 141, “Basis Weights for Paper and Textiles”. Under that definition, 10D corresponds to 10 grams per 9,000 meters of the specified yarn, 20D to 20 grams, and 40D to 40 grams.
Denier describes mass per unit length. It is not a direct measurement of yarn diameter, and it is not the weight of the finished garment. Finished tights may also combine yarns or constructions, so ask which yarn the declared denier describes and how that specification relates to the complete product.
The current International Organization for Standardization standard 1973:2021 places textile-fibre linear density in a measurement context, specifying gravimetric and vibroscope methods. Together, the standards references support treating linear density as a measurable fibre or yarn property rather than as a universal rating for finished appearance or performance.
Why denier does not equal finished opacity
Opacity is a visual judgment about how much the leg appears covered. Denier supplies one technical input, but the finished result also depends on variables that a buyer needs to review separately:
- Construction: knit structure, yarn combinations, gauge, and reinforced areas can change how material is distributed across the leg.
- Color and finish: dye shade, surface character, and contrast with the wearer and background can change the apparent level of coverage.

None of these rows establishes absolute opacity, durability, warmth, comfort, or other finished-garment performance. A 40D label alone does not prove a specific result, and a 10D or 20D label does not fully describe how a customer will see or experience the finished tights.
Ask for the specification behind the denier label
Before comparing the three samples, obtain enough information to identify what is actually being compared. For each style, ask for:
- the style reference and declared denier, including which yarn or component the value describes;
- fibre composition and any relevant yarn combination information;
- knit and garment construction details supplied for the style;
- color reference and surface finish;
- available size information and the applicable size chart;
- waistband, seam, gusset if present, brief, and toe construction;
- care information and approved product imagery; and
- any differences between the sample and the version that would be quoted.
Keep the responses attached to the sample reference. If two products use different constructions or materials, record that difference instead of treating the denier number as a like-for-like experiment.

Ask three questions before keeping all three values:
- Does each sample create a recognizable choice in the store's standard imagery?
- Does each role fit a real outfit, occasion, season, or merchandising story for the customer?
- Can the product page explain the difference using confirmed specifications and representative images?
If 10D and 20D appear too similar in the store's presentation, or if the 40D sample does not suit the planned edit, there is no need to force a three-point range. Denier comparison should help remove redundant roles as well as identify useful ones.
